The sources thus comment conflicts among ecclesiastical and temporal lords as to the occupation of a position on the ruler´s right or left side, or to the incumbent of the right to carry the ruler´s sword in a solemn procession. The author attempts a clarification of their information value for studies of courtly topics by means of analyses of some documented cases. The core of the study lies in issues of the Roman imperial court in high Middle Ages. The author also employs other examples to demonstrate the fact that coeval society reflected the symbolic significance not only in the places of the most important members of courtly society, but, essentially, in positions of all persons present. |9 eng |
